Beerstitution Volume 55: FLORAL

Beer Ye! Beer Ye!

With Spring in mind, if not in the air, I wanted to launch us into the warm weather and floral bounty that is this wondrous season with mouthfuls of floral goodness. The theme I chose, FLORAL, was in fact not that easy to find beers for even though “floral” is one of the most often quoted aspects of hop flavours and aromas. At any rate, My goal here was to isolate said floral-ness and see if we enjoyed it in the absence of the citrus, bitter bombs we also get from the normal hop suspects…

A Beerstitution Bouquet

The Beers

Vilains – Fleur [Phil]

  • Tonight we learned that Villains Brasseurs is a combo of brewers from Broken7, Helm, ETOH and Alchimiste
  • Fleur is refreshingly crisp and very sessionable. the 4 different hops come through, but it’s not overly floral.

BRSTº Rating: 3.5/5

A l’abri de la Tempête – Belle Saison [Corey]

  • So far l’Abri is not impressing us. I brought this in hopes of discovering a good beer from l’Abri and supporting the small brewery from the tiny islands of Îles de la Madeleine… but nope.
  • Pretty meh all around – you reeeeeally need to search for flavour. The floral of this (even though it states that it’s a floral beer) is more inline with a Labrador tea.

BRSTº Rating: 2/5

Matera Brasseurs – Beau Bouquet [Daniel]

  • This was very well received by almost everyone (Kristen really does not like the Brett!)
  • It’s complex, floral with a nice Brett kick and very well rounded dans la bouche!

BRSTº Rating: 4/5

Broue Pub Brouhaha – Fleur Du Diable [Kristen]

  • Nobody liked this.
  • It’s heavy on malt, syrupy almost… never have more than one of these.

BRSTº Rating: 2/5

Oshlag Brasserie x Microbrasserie La Memphré – Mêlée [Nick]

  • This is supposed to be a mêlée of NEIPA and Pilsner… which I guess it is – it’s full and good and heavy, but not syrupy. Floral and the hops here (Saaz in particular) stand out. Nose is odd but it’s a good beer that “tastes like summer”.

BRSTº Rating: 3.25/5

Estuaire – Sure Fermière Hibiscus [Val]

  • Good, nice sour with a little farmhouse kick… sliiiiiiight sweettart-ness.

BRSTº Rating: 4/5
